The Secret Sandbank The old crocodile remembers the exact spot. Not the deepest part of the river, nor the shady mangrove roots. She seeks the open bank where the sun bakes the sand until it burns her belly. That warmth is the key. She drags her heavy body ashore, scraping a hollow with her hind legs. Inside, she lays her eggs, each one a pale, leathery promise. Then she covers them with sand, patting it flat with her snout. The nest is a quiet, hidden oven. For the next ninety days, she guards it. She does not eat. She only waits, listening for the soft chirps that will tell her the shells are cracking. When they come, she digs with her claws, freeing the tiny hatchlings. They tumble toward the water, their first journey guided by her patient, watchful eye. And then she leaves, exhausted but satisfied. The sand remembers her work, and next year, she will return to the same warm patch of earth to do it all again.
